Studying the Bible with the SOAP Method

When we feel distant from God, it is often because we are not actively seeking Him. James 4:8 reminds us, “Come near to God and he will come near to you.” One effective way we can draw closer to God is through daily Bible reading and reflection. One of my favorite methods for reflecting on my Bible reading is SOAP journaling.

SOAP journaling is a valuable tool for studying Bible verses. It involves selecting a verse that resonates with you from your daily Bible reading or one that holds personal meaning. You then use this verse for a study to gain a deeper understanding of its message.

SOAP stands for:

S – Scripture

O – Observation

A – Application

P – Prayer

When using the SOAP method, it is important to consider the historical context, the verses before and after your SOAP verse, who is speaking, and what is happening in the book of the Bible it came from. Always make sure you are reading the verse in its full context before trying to determine its meaning.

S –  Scripture

Select your verse and write it down. Writing out the scripture in different translations can help you better understand a verse since different words will speak differently to each person. A study Bible or other online resource is beneficial in helping you understand the meaning of a verse.

O – Observation

Consider the following questions about the verse and jot down your answers: Who is speaking? Who are they speaking to? What does the verse before and after it say? What is happening around this verse? What words stand out to you? What does it say about God? What does this verse mean?

A – Application

Next, ask yourself the following and write it down: How can you apply this verse to your life? How is the verse relevant today? How does it point to God and what He wants for your life?

P – Prayer

And finally, write out a prayer. Physically writing out your prayer helps give you a deeper focus and lets you keep a record of your prayers. You can look back at these and see how God has been working in your life. It also allows you to work through emotions and gives you clarity.

The SOAP method can be a valuable tool in your study of the Bible. Rewbi would be delighted to walk alongside you on your faith journey with one of our SOAP journals available here.
