In the Rhône Valley of Southern France, a strong, cold northwesterly wind called the Mistral is common in winter and spring.  It brings clear, dry air into the region making the agricultural conditions perfect for growing grapes used to make wine.  The Southern Rhône area is home to many vineyards producing several varieties of wine.  One of the most famous wines is Châteauneuf-du-pape, a lovely red blend.

This is the scarf or rectangular version of my Mistral Shawl pattern which you can also purchase on this site.

The Mistral wind inspired both patterns with its flowing lines representing the winds that pass over the landscape. The scarf is knit lengthwise and consists of  a simple repeating lace pattern along both ends that is easily memorized once you get going.  The pattern is very simple with lovely results and is easy enough that you could even enjoy a glass of Châteauneuf-du-pape while you knit! The scarf is completely reversible, and looks perfect no matter how you wear it.  It can easily be made longer or wider to wear as a shawl (gray shawl shown in photos), and can be made in stripes or all one color.  Cheers!
